Our visit
I have to assume that if you are reading this you too are having to make the hardest decision you will ever make about your loved pet. Should you wish me to assist you on this journey please reach out to me via phone (9am-5pm) or by email (rainbowpawspeteuthanasia@hotmail.com). I do still work in general practice part-time so please leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can.
Initially I will organise to have a chat over the phone regarding your pet and get a bit of his/her history and medical issues etc. I can also liase with your vet if this is something you would prefer .
I will then talk you through the euthanasia visit (details of euthanasia process detailed below should you wish to read before the visit):
-
There is a small amount of paperwork including a consent form which I will do at the start of the visit so we can then concentrate on your pet
-
When you are ready I will administer a deep sedative by injection to your pet. This can be a little stingy but only lasts for a few seconds and we will have plenty of treats and distractions to try and help with this. Sometimes the sedative can make your animal feel a little nauseus (especially cats) and they can occassionally vomit. This feeling shouldnt last for long.
-
Once your pet is in a deep sleep I will clip some hair from their leg and try and locate a vein. If they are very poorly or sometimes due to the sedative their veins may be collapsed in which case I may need to use a different site for the final injection. Rest assured your pet wont be aware of this due to the deep sedation.
-
When you are ready I will administer the final injection which acts like an overdose of anaesthetic. Your pet may take some deep breaths or stretch out during this stage. I will confirm they have passed away by listening to their chest with a stethoscope.
-
After they have passed your pet may take some big gasps, these are not breaths but just a reflex after the heart has stopped. You may notice some of their muscles twitching. Often the bladder or bowels will open.
There is no right or wrong for you and your pet during the euthanasia. You make sure that you do what makes it right for you. Some things you could consider before the visit are
- where do you want it to happen?
- is there a favourite bed or blanket you want your pet to be on?
-do you want music playing?
-who would you like to be there?
- do you want to be there during the whole process or say goodbye after the sedation?
Please dont feel embarassed when I am there, crying is perfectly natural . Tell me stories about your pet, talk to them, or say nothing..... do what is right for you and your furry friend.
After they have passed you can decide whether you want to spend more time with your pet , I can step outside if you wish to be alone .
Following their passing you will then have to decide on what you want to happen to their body . Some people wish to bury the body , others wish them to be cremated. I can help you with these decisions before the visit if you would prefer.
Your vet can offer cremation services both communal and individual (where you have the option to get your pets ashes back). I can liase with your vet practice regarding this and can offer transport of your precious pet to your vet practice during their opening hours if you require *.
There are also private pet crematoriums such as Beloved Pet Funeral Care in Paisley . Beloved Pet Funeral Care provide individual bespoke cremations for pets and can organise to come and collect your pet where possible (again during business hours only). I work closely alongside Beloved Pet Funeral Care and can liase on your behalf with Beloved Pet Funeral Care as required.

Should you wish a pre euthanasia visit so you and your pet can meet me please let me know as this can be arranged *
If you feel your pet may need some extra restraint (eg for the sedation injection) I can be accompanied by a veterinary nurse*. Please let me know at our initial chat if you feel this is something that may be required so I can organise a nurse to come out with me that day.
